The Oak Grove in the Malibu Hills marked the setting for the annual Southern California Romp on Saturday, Sept. 9th—as well as the world’s first breed show for the Australian Labradoodle.

More than 50 people entered their dogs in the afternoon’s competition, all of which came from Tegan Park/ Rutland Manor ancestry. Working as judges, Angela Cunningham and Beverley Manners tallied the strengths and weaknesses of dogs in eight classes grouped according to gender and age, including the Open Bitch class that had a whopping 16 entrants. The owners walked and trotted their dogs before the judges, then had them stand for exam before the winners were selected.

A full two hours after the start of the contest, the Best in Show class was held, which consisted of winners from each of the eight previous classes. Linda Korbel (one of the romp organizers) won the Reserve Best in Show title and a $500 Rutland Manor DoodleLand Gift Certificate for her café male, Cobber. The Best in Show title, and $1,000 cash prize, went to Lisa Radler and her girl, Peanut—whose kennel name is Rutlands Carisa (sire: Rutlands Kelby; dam: Rutlands Minuette. “This is great!” whooped Lisa, when Angela and Beverely made their choice. “Peanut has always been my superstar, but I didn’t know she would be everybody’s superstar.” (To see just what exactly it is that makes Peanut perfect, please see Build-A-Doodle  by Beverley).

“It was amazing to see everyone totally focused on the dogs for that length of time,” said Angela, following the marathon judging. “This show, and others to come, will help set the standards for the Australian Labradoodle that we’re all trying to achieve.”
